Valerian falls through space and time, through imagined and real worlds, he is escaping from visual illusions, or just a reach to prove a point to Laureline, his objet de desir. As a viewer, you are torn apart, between flying spaceships, attacking monsters, and this confusing lead pair that never were to be. And there is joy to be had in this conflict. Of course there is a dying(or dead) planet, and galaxies to save, and civilizations to unite, but there are also retro strip clubs, techno bazaars of elsewhere, a faint bhangra beat in a galactic bar, weapons that appear and disappear at will, avatars fight avatars, and informers, well inform, although at a price. 
All this and more in a rough 2 hours makes Valerian worth the long wait of decades and more. It is sheer delight to the senses, and the unapologetically convoluted storylines(or lack of), the almost absent ambition, and the imperfections makes it score amidst a mainstream obsessed with form and structure(partly to blame on the overdrive of sci-fi we have got off late from Passengers to Star Wars films to the GOTG franchise to the nth Alien film). 
Luc Besson tries to give Valerian a free-wheeling mood, but it is not the 80s, and hence we have to make do with PG joyride-space-noir. But that does not take away the joys of Valerian- a goofy worldwise narrator, summing up the evolution of space travel, an alien planet(all planets are alien to someone, come to think of it), where one face is more attractive than others, and the shells have a deeper meaning(perhaps?). The lead pair is very un-mainstream, in the way they don’t really hit it off ever, pretty French if you ask me, their backstories are left unattended like the many alien planets they never thought important.
